You get enquiries. More enquiries than you expected, frankly. Some weeks it feels promising. Other weeks it feels like standing in the middle of a car boot sale in the rain - a lot of people picking things up, very few intending to buy, and the whole thing taking more out of you than it puts in.

Visibility outpacing what your practice can hold creates a kind of overload - one that looks like success from the outside and feels like chaos from the inside.

You're fully booked. Technically. But the calendar is full of the wrong appointments, the inbox has three unanswered DMs you've been dreading, and "fully booked" somehow doesn't feel the way you thought it would when you were building toward it.

The reach is real. The container holding it is buckling. More enquiries at this point is a plumbing problem, and plumbers fix pipes before buying more taps.

The feeling of being watched by the wrong people

You post something considered. Something true. Something it took you a while to write. And immediately, something in your chest goes slightly strange - relieved on the surface, exposed underneath.

The post landed in the wrong field.

An exposed feeling after posting is a signal, not a personality quirk. Your practice is telling you the people receiving it are the wrong people for it.

The ones you'd love to reach - already carrying the question your work answers - are somewhere else entirely. The actual cause is structural

Here's the bit most practices miss entirely, usually because a coach has convinced them the problem is their mindset, their messaging, or their reluctance to "fully commit to visibility." The mindset is fine. The messaging is probably fine.

What's absent is a values filter between public content and direct contact - a mechanism routing the right people forward while everyone else comfortably self-selects out before reaching your inbox.

Right now, every person encountering your work has a direct line to you. Open access. No signal-checking. No moment where they consider whether this is genuinely for them. They just… arrive. In your DMs, your inbox, your WhatsApp if you've made that particular mistake.

Practices that build one clear boundary between public content and direct contact - a short intake form, a positioning statement, a pointed question prompting self-selection - notice the shift in enquiry quality within the first month. Before changing their content. Before redesigning anything. Before rethinking their offer.

Just the one filter. The difference is immediate enough to be slightly annoying in retrospect.

Enquiries arriving shapeless and draining start arriving pre-qualified. People who've read what you do, recognised themselves in it, and made an active decision to reach out - rather than firing off a message because your post came up between two other things at lunchtime.

Precision and protection are the same work

Healers hold a persistent belief: reaching more people and protecting the integrity of their practice are two separate concerns - one belonging to marketing, one belonging to spirituality, and never the twain, et cetera. This belief is expensive.

They are the same work. Knowing exactly who your practice is for, and being clear about it publicly, is the protection mechanism. Clarity at the front end means the people arriving have already passed a filter - their own. They've read what you do, seen themselves in it, and stepped forward.

Vagueness reads as an open invitation to everyone. Including people who will take a lot of your time, drain a lot of your energy, and ultimately decide your work is wrong for them three sessions in.

The people your work is genuinely for respond better to precision. They've been waiting for a practice to describe their situation exactly - and the practices doing that attract fewer tyre-kickers and more people ready to commit.

More output is the wrong diagnosis

Some practices spend years in this loop. They feel overexposed and under-booked with your best-fit clients. The instinct - or the coach's instinct, paid handsomely for - is that the solution is more content, more frequency, more output across more platforms.

So they produce more. And more wrong-fit contact arrives. Which feels like the market telling them to produce more still. A solid loop.

Increasing output while the filter problem stays unfixed increases the surface area of wrong contact, and the ratio of right-fit bookings holds roughly constant. The exhaustion increases proportionally.

The practices longest in this loop are often the most visible ones. Prolific posters. Active across several platforms. Genuinely committed to the work and perplexed - devastated, even - by the gap between effort and outcome.

The diagnosis was always structural. The treatment was always one well-positioned filter. More content was never going to close that gap, and deep down, you already knew.

The first sign you've got the cause right

Practices often expect the first proof of improvement to look like a spike in bookings. More enquiries, faster conversions, a suddenly full calendar with the right names on it. The first sign arrives earlier and carries more information.

The first observable shift is enquiries stopping with that low-level intrusive feeling - the one you've been managing as though it's an unfortunate feature of public work rather than a condition with a fix.

Messages arrive and you drop the pre-emptive wince. You read them and the fit is already apparent before you've even replied. The person on the other end has done the work of self-identifying because your content made it possible for them.

Bookings follow from that shift. But the quality of incoming enquiries is the leading indicator - bookings trail behind it. Practices waiting for bookings to validate the change miss the actual signal entirely.
